Our first week in Richmond has been nothing less than eventful!
We are currently staying in a temporary apartment a few miles southwest of Richmond. We signed a one month lease so that Lauren will have a chance to look for a job and give us both time to get geared up for our house hunt. Probably the best thing about this apartment is that we're next to a 9 acre lake... which means that I get to fish anytime I want! The worst thing about this place is that we don't have "all of the essential cooking tools." It's a good thing that our lake is a catch-and-release lake only! We will be glad when we don't feel like we are in transition anymore and have a place to call home!
So on to the weeks events... I started work on Tuesday at my new office in downtown Richmond. The office is a little bigger than the one in MN but it has a lot more "young people" in it. I still have a lot of organizing to do (project wise) but that stuff will work itself out.
Now, let me back up a week or so... I have several OCD-like tendencies (thanks dad) and my latest fixation has been on keeping our two, bigger than life, vehicles in tip-top shape for our LONG road trip here. Seriously, it got to the point where I was checking the oil, coolant, and air pressure in all of the tires for both vehicles at LEAST twice a day! Crazy, I know... Before we left MN, we replaced the transmission cooler lines and the front axle seals on the Suburban and we replaced the A/C compressor (a must have here in VA) on the Tahoe. Anyways, I tell you that so that you'll have a mental picture of our like-new trucks. Well when we got here, I went through my routine of checking all of the tires on both vehicles and noticed that one of the tires on the Tahoe was about 20 lbs low... So I took it to one of the big chain tire shops and they said that I had a nail in the tread but that they were not "comfortable fixing it"... and their recommendation was for me to buy a new tire... NO THANKS! On Wednesday, I asked Lauren to take it to a small mom-and-pop store to see if they'd plug it. While in route to their shop, she had a little fender bender. Everyone involved was okay but both vehicles sustained a little damage. Unfortunately, our "University of Tennessee Alumni" plate on the front bumper took most of the blow on our truck :'-(. She shook it off and both of us had a normal week until yesterday...
On Saturday morning, I went fishing and caught several fish. Then Lauren and I went to the pool, where my MN-snow white skin got scorched (sorry mom, I missed a few spots when putting on sunblock). Afterwards, we went to the biggest antique mall that I've ever been to and then the 35th annual Richmond Greek Festival that was located in the neighborhood where we'd like to buy a house. IT WAS AWESOME! The food was incredible and there were hundreds of people there! Being there really solidified our decision to look in that neighborhood. After stuffing our faces with pork kabobs, spinich/cheese cresant things, suffted grape leaves (they're better than they sound), greek green beans, and handmade lemonade, we decided to go grocery shopping (never shop on an empty stomach)! While we were driving home from the store, I heard Lauren say, "ohhhh no!" and then she started to swerve over into the adjacent lane. By the time that I figured out what was going on, I saw a guy in an 80's model convertable Jag bookin' it around the corner (way to fast and uncontrollably) and he clipped us on the driver's side rear tire!!! THEN, he sped off and kept going! Luckily, I turned around in time and got his license plate number. There was a sweet lady who was across from us who saw the whole thing happen. She stopped to check on us (we were both shook up, but fine) and stayed to be a witness. A police woman came and took our story and said that we have the right to his insurance information and/or to press charges. She said that the plate number that we gave her was a valid plate and that there was similar car registered to a fella who matched the description. She let us go and came by the apartment later last night and said that she found the guy at his house. He admitted to the accident and said that he was "scared because it sounded bad" so he drove off... he was more worried about his Jag that the people he hit! Lauren is a lot more forgiving than me... I wanted to throw him in jail, but that's more because he is an inconsiderate jerk. But, the damage was minor (at the time, we were more concerned about the ice cream melting in the back seat) and everyone was okay! We'll contact the insurance and let his company take care of the damage. So, during our first week, we managed to put a hole in a tire, and wreck both of our vehicles... GEEZ!
Today we plan to go to "Broad-Appetite" (a food festival in downtown Richmond) and hope to get back to the house without damaging either vehicle! We hope everyone has a great week (better than ours, hopefully)!
Note from Lauren: E's account is accurate, but I am offering a few clarifications... E did not miss any sunblock he made a concious decision to not put sunblock on. I have since bought my poor lobster-like husband some spray on sunscreen so that he has no excuses. Also, the greek food was amazing, the spinach crescent things were spanikopita and the kabobs- souvlaki. It was really awesome and obviously the it place to be the first weekend in June each year. Let's hope we have a less eventful second week in Richmond. Love to all!
